Greentech NutriGrow Humorganic Carbon Based Liquid Fertilizer
A Study on Safe, High Quality and Nutritious Rice
(ABSTRACT)

Greentech Humorganic Carbon Based Liquid Fertilizer is a type of organic fertilizer produced by Green Agritech International Limited. This Company has been in cooperation with Changsha University on the application of the fertilizer since 2007, on the cultivation of Chinese cabbage, cucumber and paddy, and the corresponding study, research, experiment and demonstration. Results showed the effect of yield increase and improvement of quality, which is a very important function, especially for rice.

Study of rice quality in the past mainly focused on two aspects: improvement of variety and strengthening nutrition. On seed selection for breeding good quality rice, tasty variety was the main target. For example, in Japan, a variety with a comparatively large scale of branched starch had been chosen to get good taste. In Thailand, the bred paddy variety resulted in cooked rice exhibiting a special fragrant smell. Breeding could only improve certain quality index. In order to increase rice nutrition value, study on enhancing nutrition measures had been carried out in many countries, mainly to be materialized during rice polishing process. In the past, the methods of fabrication nutrition-enhancing rice roughly could be sorted out in two categories: Intrinsic and Extrinsic methods.  Intrinsic Method was with the aid of preserving nutrition inherent in rice skin layer and bud, hence to increase rice nutrition value. Extrinsic Method was through additional nutrition element to have rice nutrition value increased. That was to let liquefied nutrition enhancer to be absorbed by rice grains and dried up by heat.

Both Methods appeared to have some deficiency. In fact, Intrinsic Method was only to upkeep existing nutrition in rice, and the fabrication technology was complicated and difficult to implement. For Extrinsic Method, high cost of nutrition enhancer and equipments were required in a complicated technical process, and strange smell might emerge on rice in case of adding unsuitable amount of enhancer.

In  order to enhance rice quality, the writer carried out experiments on the application of Greentech NutriGrow humic acid based liquid fertilizer on cultivation of paddy at Ma Zhan Village, Liu Yang Bei Sheng Town, Changsha City, Hunan Province in 2009, the resulting performance was overwhelming.

The following is the test reports:

1. Materials and Methods
 1.1 Field Test Materials

  1.1.1 Paddy variety: Zhong You 218
  1.1.2 Fertilizers:

Greentech NutriGrow humic acid based liquid fertilizer: produced by Greentech (Suzhou) HumorganicTechnology Limited
NPK Compound Fertilizer: available in the marketplace


 1.2 Field Test Method
  1.2.1 Field Test

Random selection of plot group plan was adopted in the test, 3 repetitions for each Treatment.
Treatment 1: Greentech NutriGrow humic acid based liquid fertilizer, on a usage of 1.9 kg/Ha and diluted to 350 times.
Treatment 2: For comparison, regular compound fertilizer, 6.3 kg/Ha, mixed with 100 times of water.
Treatment 3: For comparison, using clean water only.

1.2.2 Plot Arrangement

The arrangement was at the late paddy booting stage, an area of even soil fertility was chosen, and applied with similar basal fertilizer on a paddy field with consistent growth status. Randomly, based on an original sub-area (width 3.0 m), wide plastic tape was used to divide the area into 9 experiment plots. Each plot covered 66.7 m2 (22.2 m X 3.0 m).

1.2.3. Fertilization Method and Date

Application Date: First application: Sept 03, 2009;
        Second application: Sept 09, 2009;
        Third application: Sept 16, 2009.
Application Method: The timing for each spraying was after 9.0 AM. at that time, morning mist on leaves surfaces was dried up and          fertilizer could adhere onto rice plants.
Application Quantity: 4.2KG diluted fertilizer was sprayed on the Leaves of test plots of Treatments 1 & 2.
Field management was performed according to conventional practice.

1.2.4 Rice Quality Analysis

Samples were tested and analyzed at Modern Analytical Test Centre,Xiang Ya Medical College, Central South University.

2 Field Test Results and Analysis

2.1 Table 1 shows the test results on Important Amino Acid Content

The analysis on Amino Acid content expressed the fact that after the application of Greentech NutriGrow humic acid based liquid fertilizer, 7 types of amino acid content in rice out of 8 types of essential amino acid, which are beyond human body’s capability to synthetize, had been increased substantially.  

From the Table 1 shown above: Compared Treatment 1 with Treatment 2, the contents of lysine, leucine, methionine, threonine, phenylalanine, ioleucine and valine were increased by 38.83%, 25.69%, 25.21%, 22.87%, 16.10% 12.10% and 7.5% respectively.

Compared Treatment 1 with Treatment 3, the contents of lysine, leucine, threonine, phenylalanine, isoleucine and valine were increased by 41.26%, 18.48%, 17.86%, 15.80%, 9.62% and 6.70% respectively.

Besides, in comparison of Treatment 1 with Treatment 2, contents of several types of other important amino acids were also increased substantially, e.g. alanine increased by 26.68%, glycine 25.25%, arginine 24.18% and serine 20.33%.

2.2 Contents of Beneficial Elements in Rice

Table 2 indicated that compared Treatment 1 with Treatment 2, contents of Selenium (Se) element increased by 29.65% and Copper (Cu) by 5.23%.

In comparison of Treatment 1 with Treatment 3, contents of various mineral elements were also increased substantially.

2.3 Contents of Harmful Elements in Rice

Table 3 indicated that compared Treatment 1 with Treatment 2, contents of harmful elements in rice such as mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) had reduced by 42.11%, 13.85% and 11.42% respectively.

In comparison of Treatment 1 with related national standard limitation, contents of harmful elements in rice such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) were lower by 5614.29%, 257.14% and 81.82% respectively.

3. Discussion and Conclusion

 3.1 Discussion
 3.1.1 Content of Amino Acid

In the past, to produce high quality rice, one of the methods to achieve was through selection of good rice variety.  The shortcoming of this method was not able at the same time to increase the contents of 7 essential amino acids to a large extent. 

The other method was to apply nutrition enhancer to intensify rice quality. The shortcoming of this method was not only due to its high cost and complicated technology, but also in case of improper fabrication process, smelly cooked rice might emerge.

However, in this experiment study, Greentech NutriGrow humic acid based liquid fertilizer was applied and a type of pure natural high quality nutritious rice was achieved. The experiment results indicated that during the period of late rice booting till heading, the application of 1.9 kg/Ha, diluted to 350 times of the liquid fertilizer would stably increase the contents of essential and several  types of important amino acids in rice. Compared with the application of clean water and regular chemical compound fertilizer, the application of Greentech liquid fertilizer in Treatment 1 had proved to increase the contents of essential and several types of important amino acids in rice.

It is at present not clear about the mechanism behind why the application of related Greentech NutriGrow humic acid based liquid fertilizer would increase contents of amino acids in rice in a large margin. Further study will be needed.

 3.1.2Content of Beneficial Elements 

Effects of microelement Selenium (Se) are: anti-ageing, prevention of cardiovascular disease, eye-sight protection, detoxification and prevention of cancer; it also has an important function of strengthening immunity in human body.

Functions of microelement copper (Cu) in human body are: participating in iron supersession, maintaining normal hematopoiesis function, forming part of metal enzyme to directly involved in metabolism, and also playing a role in skeletal growth. This experiment and study proved that compared the application of Greentech liquid fertilizer with that of regular compound fertilizer, the content of Selenium increased by 29.65% and copper by 5.23%. This no doubt has further enhanced the nutrition value of rice.

 3.1.3 Content of Harmful Elements

Compared the application of Greentech liquid fertilizer with the use of regular chemical compound fertilizer, contents of harmful elements had been reduced greatly. And in comparison with the allowable limit for harmful elements in rice stipulated in the related national standard, contents of lead, cadmium and mercury were lower by 5614.29%, 257.14% and 81.82% respectively.

Possible reasons for the large scale reduction of harmful elements in rice, on the application of Greentech NutriGrow humic acid based liquid fertilizer:

1) Content of harmful elements in Greentech liquid fertilizer itself could be relatively much less than chemical compound fertilizer.
2) Greentech liquid fertilizer was able to suppress paddy plant from absorption of harmful elements.

3.2 Conclusion

Application of Greentech NutriGrow humic acid based liquid fertilizer on the cultivation of paddy would produce safe, high quality and nutritious rice. This is very important in economic value and a significant measure for human health care.
